Magicard Prima 401/402 Product Review
The Magicard Prima 401/402 is a good, reliable plastic ID card printer, producing high-quality results. In one compact package, with the opportunity to add on software, there is no need to buy another printer as this one does it all.
Produce single and dual-sided cards in full-colour in stunning 300dpi resolution with the additional option of 600dpi.
Supplied with a three year UltraCoverPlus Warranty as standard with hassle-free printhead cover and loaner service. This includes a free replacement for any printhead damage.
With the Prima 401/402, the LED screen means printing is easy and accessible to anyone. The printer will also alert you when the ribbon needs replacing, or the printer requires cleaning, enabling you to carry on without interruption.
With the Prima 401/402 set-up guide, it is simple, and you will have your printer up and running in no time. If there are any issues, Magicard support is on hand to help.
With an electronic lock for the hopper and printer door, both your cards and ribbon are secure. To add to this, the additional option of laminating offers complete durability and security to ensure your cards not only last longer, but images are kept in a high resolution for longer, avoiding fraud issues.
To print invisible photographs or text, a special dye sublimation Ultra Violet (UV) ribbon can be used to produce high-security cards. The UV ink is only visible with the use of a UV light source. This special YMCK-UV ribbon enables an affordable yet still highly secure feature.
With the Prima 401/402, there is the option to add on Magnetic stripe encoding, iCLASS or Contactless / MIFARE Encoder upgrade. There is also the option for an ultra-violet upgrade or an over laminate upgrade.
The Prima 401/402 uses a reverse-transfer printing process. This is where images are first printed onto a thin film then heat transferred onto the card surface. This produces a high-resolution glossy image, printed right over the edge of the card.
The Magicard Prima 401/402 uses only the CR80 credit card sized cards.
Better suited to businesses wanting smaller batches in a greater range, the Prima 401/402 can produce 2,800 full colour (YMCK) single-sided cards a week, based on a 35-hour week.
The Prima 401/402 has the ability to print 80 full colour (YMCK) single-sided cards per hour.
Fit with USB and secure IPSEC Ethernet as standard, the Prima 401/402 enables both a network and a single desktop to connect, meaning flexibility is increased so if printing requirements change further on, it is easy to adapt to.
Standard USB/Ethernet ports and the browser-based Printer Manager helps you integrate printers into third-party applications as well as existing systems.
As the Prima 401/402 is a retransfer printer, it is larger than other printers in the Magicard range. Its exact measurements are; 320mm (H) x 343mm (W) x 330mm (L) and it weighs 15.5kg.
As it is larger than other printers, the Prima 401/402’s appearance is kept in cool grey and blue tones, helping to ensure it blends smoothly into any office environment. The small display screen also adds a modern edge whilst being easily accessible for use.
For many users, they don’t think about ID card design software. EasyBadge Professional is the most advanced ID card design software available and gives the user complete control over how their card looks.
There is also the option to choose from one of four templates or switch to the creative mode and design a new card from scratch.

After a full assessment, we have awarded the Magicard Prima 401/402, three out of five stars.
It is a reliable printer, offering high-quality printing, and the security is easily increased just by changing the type of ribbon used from a standard to a UV ribbon to print invisible text or images.
The retransfer printing style also means all images are glossy and printed right over the edge of the card, avoiding the disadvantages of edge-to-edge printing.
The only downsides are the slower speed resulting from the retransfer style of printing and the price tag.
