The HDP5000 was designed to take ID and plastic card security one step further. The machine not only comes complete with card security features but is also the first of its kind to help prevent card cloning and duplication.
Holographic overlaminate – The printer allows the user to apply a holographic overlaminate or holographic HDP film to the front of an ID card, which will improve its durability and security. The overlaminate can be a custom design or a business logo. This feature adds a level of visual security to your identity cards, making cloned versions of cards easier to spot.
The HDP5000 has several encoding options including barcode encoding and magnetic stripe encoding. These options allow additional data to be stored on your cards that you may not wish to be made public by being on the face of the card.
This machine is a retransfer card printer, meaning the card design is printed onto a transparent film which is then fused onto the surface of a card.
Retransfer printing allows for full printing coverage of the card, something that direct-to-card (DTC) printers can't do. The resulting cards are similar to those produced on costly large-scale professional digital and litho presses. This method also helps to protect the card design from fading and is beneficial when users are printing onto smart cards.
The printer prints to CR80 (credit card) sized cards only but from a range of materials including PVC, PET, PETG, proximity, smart (access control), and magnetic stripe cards.
If you’re looking to print onto proximity or technology cards with an uneven surface, then this machine will do just that.
Based on a full working day of seven hours, the HDP5000 can print 620 full-colour single-sided cards (YMCK with retransfer).
One YMCK card with a retransfer film will take around 29 seconds to print.
Please note that adding additional transfer films such as; single or dual-sided lamination will result in a longer print speed.
The base model comes with USB connectivity. When upgraded to iCLASS and encoding, it comes with single wire Ethernet that allows for network connectivity for multiple users.
The printer is compatible with Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, and Mac OS X v10.6 and V10.5 & Linux.
The dimensions of the machine are, length: 23.5cm, height is 29.2cm and width, 31.3cm.
Please note that if you’re looking to purchase two or more machines, then we advise on creating a dedicated printing area.
The HDP5000 carries a very professional look and feel. The solid two-colour base and LCD control panel means it sits nicely in a variety of office environments.
Ensuring your cards look professional comes directly from the card design. When using the HDP5000, we advise on using the EasyBadge Enterprise software.
The software allows for MIFARE and magnetic stripe encoding and is more suited to batch printing.
Choose from one of four built-in templates or create a design from scratch. Please note that EasyBadge is not Mac compatible.
Our verdict is to award the Fargo HDP5000 is 4.5 stars out of 5. Based on in-house tests, the printer offers a superior print quality when compared to similar models, and the ability to print to uneven surfaced cards makes it an excellent choice for larger organisations.
The printer is more expensive than direct-to-card printers, but as a retransfer printer, it's very competitive. If we could make one change, it would be to look at improving the overall print speed.
