Datacard SD460 Product Review
Safeguard your business with advanced security and durability with the Datacard SD460 card printer. The SD460 desktop plastic card printer provides everything you need to print a highly secure ID card.
Known for reliability, this all-in-one desktop printer comes complete with Tactile impression and a lamination module meaning you can easily add secure overlays such as logo’s and graphics to reduce cloning attempts. The lamination module also means better durability and lifespan of the card, helping you avoid costly re-issuance.
This printer is only available as a dual-sided model, meaning printing on both sides of the card.
As you are responsible for printing cards, you want the best design and print quality possible. You are sure to impress cardholders with vibrant, high-resolution and clear images.
The SD460 is backed by a 30-month warranty cover alongside a 30-month warranty cover on replacement print heads. We also have a dedicated team of printer experts on hand post-sale to assist with any questions you may have.
Having a machine rich in features but difficult to use is not good for any business. You can quickly become an expert using the machine and will be able to showcase this easily to other colleagues if they ever need to print a batch of cards in your absence. The Quick-change ribbons switch out in seconds with easy-to-load supplies.
The setup of this machine could not be simpler. Simply unbox and follow the step by step guide, and we guarantee to have you up and running in under 15 minutes.
As counterfeiting and alteration attempts become more sophisticated, adding at least one layer of visual card security is a must. The 460 model is rich in security features:
Tactile Impression -The feature allows you to impress a standard design or create a custom design which you can see and feel. This is then impressed onto the card laminate and substrate to help make alteration attempts immediately evident.
Holographic Overlays - Alongside the tactile impression, Datacard created DuraShield™. This feature gives you the ability to add bright, holographic overlays to each card taking security and durability to new levels. By providing a full edge to edge card coverage, it’s virtually impossible to remove intact and offers four times the durability of basic topcoats at nearly the same price.
Automatic card flattening - The SD460 contains a unique de-bowing feature that flattens the card after lamination to meet ISO standards for quality.
Please note that a Kensington security lock is also available as an additional add-on with this machine.
There is the option to add on Magnetic stripe encoding or Contactless / MIFARE Encoder upgrade.
Other options include:
ISO 7811 three-track option (high- and low-coercivity).
JIS Type II single-track option.
Support for standard and custom data formats.
The SD460 is a duplex direct to card printer. Direct to card is completed by using two methods, Dye-sublimation & resin thermal transfer. Please note this printer covers edge-to-edge printing meaning a small white border maybe visible around the edges of the card depending on the card design.
You will only be able to print CR80 (credit card size) cards using the SD460.
As mentioned in our opening lines, the SD460 is more suited to the needs and requirements of medium-large volumes. The SD460 has many printing options, so we have broken the print volumes up below, based on a full working week.
• 7,000 single sided colour cards with single side lamination.
• 4,375 single sided colour cards with, reverse side black, and single side lamination.
• 6,575 single sided colour cards with single side lamination and tactile impression.
• 5,250 double-sided cards with double-sided lamination and tactile impression.
An overall fast system means you can print up to 200 single-sided cards with a lamination per hour. Alongside print speed the 460 also has a secure storage unit for rejected cards meaning less downtime.
As the 460 model is more suited towards larger card programs, it has been designed to provide both Ethernet and USB connection as standard. Used within the financial, corporate and education sectors, the ability to directly connect to a network is a big plus as there may be more than one staff member responsible for the production of secure ID cards.
Standard USB/Ethernet ports and the browser-based Printer Manager helps you integrate SD Series printers into third-party applications as well as existing systems.
When compared to other SD printer models the SD460 is the largest of the group. Due to its advanced security features the size and the weight of this printer increase respectively, so our advice is to create a designated printing area. The dimensions are 675 mm (L) x 270 mm (W) x 513 mm (H).
Datacards distinctive blue colour is present throughout this machine, which also gives it a more modernised look when compared to other models in a similar category.
The best card design software we recommend is EasyBadge Professional. Their advanced ID card design software gives the user more control over how their card looks, allowing an unlimited amount of cards to be created. With the choice of either pre-loaded design templates or the option to design a new card from scratch in the creative mode, the possibilities are unlimited.

We have awarded the Datacard SD460 three and a half stars out of five.
It is much better than the other Datacard printers in the range due to its advanced security features of tactile impression, holographic overlays and automatic card flattening.
But increased security doesn't make the perfect card printer. Its large size makes it awkward to keep on a desk whilst its value for money is not great. We recommend the IDP Smart 51 as it offers the extra security features with lamination at a much lower cost.
