Magicard Rio Pro 360 Product Review
Magicard has raised the bar with the Rio Pro 360 plastic ID card printer by delivering a printer with versatile intelligence.
The Rio Pro 360 is a cost-effective way to create secure photo ID cards with the choice of both single-sided and dual-sided models available to the user. There is also the ability to add 100 or 200 input card hoppers, which provides users with the opportunity to batch-print a large number of cards in one go.
In principle, the Rio Pro 360 is everything users love about the original Rio Pro but better.
The most significant change in comparison to the Rio Pro is the introduction of the new LYNK onboard CPU system. The new system is designed to enhance image quality and has a broader colour spectrum. Cards printed by the Rio Pro 360 are more vibrant and colourful, which results in a more accurate representation of the card, and is more recognisable from afar.
Magicard offers a full 3-year UltraCoverPlus warranty and also back this up with a UK based customer support team.
Please note that on-site printer support packages are also available from Digital ID to help give you peace of mind that you’re protected by the best in the business.
All aspects of the Rio Pro 360 are simple and easy to use; whether it be a ribbon change or cleaning the printer.
Please note that we advise that the printer is cleaned at the end of each ribbon cycle, which on average is around 250 prints, and not forgetting to dispose of the ribbon securely.
The input and output hoppers mean the user can print in larger batches which allows them to work on other jobs at the same time.
Like all printers in the Magicard range, simply unbox the new machine, connect, and then follow the on-screen instructions on your computer screen.
With the Rio Pro 360, Magicard has made advanced visual card security a priority, and this is now accessible to all users at no additional cost. The visual card security features are broken down into three options, HoloKote®, Custom HoloKote® and HoloPatch.
The standard HoloKote® is an anti-fraud watermark which is printed on the entire card surface. The Rio Pro 360 includes ten generic designs for the user to choose.
A Custom HoloKote® security watermark is the next level up; this enables a personalised HoloKote® watermark into the standard print process, this could be an organisation’s logo or another unique security design. The new LYNK system allows a secure online delivery of up to ten bespoke HoloKote® to the printer through the driver interface. This innovative security option means the user can start producing secure ID cards in far less time than is required by a custom holographic overlaminate solution, and at a fraction of the cost.
The HoloPatch works in conjunction with the HoloKote® feature. HoloPatch cards have a highly reflective gold super diffuser foil square that enhances the visibility of the overprinted HoloKote® logo. By combining both elements, it significantly lowers the risk of printed cards being cloned.
With this printer, the user can add a contact or contactless chip encoding module to enable the printer to encode access control or payment cards to interact with user’s systems.
The printer can encode hi-co and lo-co ISO 7811 and JIS2 magnetic stripe cards.
Smart card encoding is compatible to contact chip, MIFARE, DESFire and iClass.
The Rio Pro 360 is the first desktop ID card printer with an embedded Linux-based CPU. The CPU enables seamless communication and secure processing of ID data. The easiest way to explain this is to imagine the printer has a brain onboard and looks to print a high-quality, secure card in the fastest time possible.
This printer is a direct-to-card (DTC) model that has been designed and developed on proven-to-work features from its predecessor the Rio Pro. For those unfamiliar, DTC printing is the industry standard process for printing plastic cards.
Printing to both CR80 (credit card) and CR79 sized cards come as standard with the Rio Pro 360. Concerning card material, PVC ISO blank cards, hi-co magnetic stripe, smart cards, self-adhesive, rewritable, and HoloPatch cards are all compatible with this printer.
The 360 has been developed to meet the demands of high volumes without comprising on card quality.
Based on a standard working day of seven hours, the printer can produce around 5,250 single-colour cards (monochrome) and 1,400 full-colour (YMCKO) single-sided cards.
The Rio Pro 360 is Magicards quickest printer to date. The addition of advanced electronics and software platform means a significant increase in the overall performance of the printer.
From the exact moment the user hits print, a full-colour card with a secure HoloKote® feature takes just 18 seconds to print which is then ready to issue and scratch and colour-fade resistant.
The Rio Pro 360 has a 200 card capacity input hopper as standard, with a 70 capacity output card hopper.
The Rio Pro 360 has the intelligence to meet the needs of modern businesses.
Both USB and Ethernet connectivity are available and can be integrated at ease with most third-party applications locally or in the cloud.
This printer is compatible for use with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 (32 and 64bit) Windows server 2003 R2 SP2, 2008, 2012, 2016. Mac OS X 10.9.0 upwards. Linux with CUPS support.
The machine will sit comfortably on an office desk or open reception area. The size difference of the 360 from the Rio Pro is an extra 5 cm in height. The exact dimensions are; 47 cm x 22 cm x 30 cm (length, width, and height).
Ruling out the black band-like décor that surrounds the screen, there isn't much change in the appearance when compared to the previous Rio Pro model.
The machine would fit in nicely into any professional office environment.
The finished product is only as good as the design printed and that’s where EasyBadge can help.
EasyBadge Professional is an advanced ID card design software that gives the user complete control over how their card looks.
There is also the option to choose from one of four templates or switch to the creative mode and design a new card from scratch.

After carrying out in-house tests and assessing every aspect of this printer, our verdict is to award the Magicard Rio Pro 360, five stars out of five.
The numerous security features on offer were the critical factor in our decision. The ability to add an anti-fraud watermark that is unique to the business or organisation for no extra cost is above and beyond other manufacturers.
The flexibility of the Rio Pro 360 facilitates the user to purchase a single-sided printer and upgrade it to a dual-sided printer at a later date, therefore, removing the stress from any initial configuration decision and continually evolving with the user's requirements.
